Frank Horvat
Images of the 50s and 60s
May 1st – June 13th 2009

Frank Horvat (*1928) is amongst the photographers, without whom the history of fashion photography could not be written. After studying art the Italian starts with travel reportages and moves to Paris in 1955, where he has contacts to the likes of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Capa. He works as a freelance photographer for magazines such as Picture Post, Paris Match and Life, before getting in 1958 his first fashion assignment for Elle. The next 20 years he works for the leading magazines in Europe and the US, without falling for short living trends. Determined by reportage photography, which remains life long second mainstay, he invents the unpretentious, journalistic 35mm aesthetic into his fashion photography - in those days a little revolution. This first presentation of his work is the opening exhibition of the new Galerie Hiltawsky.
